What is a study grant?
An increasingly common substitute for scholarships are study grants. They are a type of non-repayable financial aid, much like scholarships, but the main distinction is where the money comes from. Study grants are typically provided by a third-party source rather than being connected to any specific college or university (e.g. a corporate, government or charity project). They will typically take the form of a straight cash grant or monthly allowance rather than a tuition fee remission due to this lack of relationship.
A study grant usually covers all the aspects of student needs similar to a bursary or scholarship. These grants help to pay for the necessities associated with higher education such as tuition, accommodation, study materials and textbooks. Some grants are also provided to students based on specialized work or study research. Organizations and companies will often offer grants to students who work in specific fields.

Types of study grants
- Pell Grants
One of the most well-known types of federal need-based financial help is the Pell Grant program. Only undergraduate students who have not yet obtained a bachelor’s or advanced degree are eligible for these grants. Because Pell Grant recipients must prove extraordinary financial need, students from low-income families are more likely to be eligible.
- Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant
The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) program is another significant federal program. Only students aspiring to teach are eligible for this type of need-based financial help, which requires completing a certification exam like the CBEST or PRAXIS exam. Students must agree to work as teachers for four years following graduation in low-income schools in order to be eligible for the scholarship. Should they fail to fulfill this obligation, the grant turns into an interest-bearing loan that the students must pay back.
- Athletic Scholarships
Amounts of financial aid given by the college athletic department to student-athletes are known as athletic scholarships. The student’s athletic ability and ability to benefit the team are taken into consideration when awarding these athletic scholarships. Scholarship recipients and amounts are determined by coaches.
- Federal Grants
The government provides federal grants to students to assist with their college expenses. The official Federal Student Aid website lists four primary categories of federal student grants. You must first file a Free Application for Federal Student assistance (FAFSA) form in order to be eligible to apply for any of these federal financial assistance grants.
Eligibility for study grants
Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- at the time of the application deadline, be at least 25 years old;
- be a citizen of one of the nations (apart from the Trinity Washington University Program) specified on the MMEG country eligibility list;
- upon completing their application, be registered—that is, accepted—at an authorized on-site school and program;
- intend to enroll following the MMEG grant award for a minimum of one full academic semester (half-year term);
- Plan to graduate within three years of the MMEG grant if awarded;
- not be related to a World Bank Group, International Monetary Fund, or Inter-American Development Bank staff member, spouse, retiree, or MMEG Board member.
How to apply for a study grant
Students must first identify the appropriate study grant for their studies before they may apply for study grants. After that, they must fill out the application and send in the necessary paperwork, which could include personal statements, recommendation letters, and academic records.
