What are international graduate fellowships?
International graduate fellowships are financial awards granted to students to support study, research, or work abroad. Eligible students are selected through an often competitive application process.
International Fellowships and Scholarships
- Churchill Scholarship
Provides funding to American students for a year of Master’s study in science, mathematics, and engineering at the University of Cambridge, based at Churchill College in the UK.
- Critical Language Scholarship
A fully supported summer language and cultural immersion program for graduate and undergraduate students in the United States abroad. For students at every level of language acquisition, CLS offers chances to a wide spectrum of students from across the United States. Applications from students with a variety of majors and fields are invited.
- DAAD–German Academic Exchange Service
Study Scholarships are awarded to highly qualified graduating seniors and graduate students of all disciplines to pursue an advanced degree in part or entirely at a German university.
- Fulbright U.S. Student Grant
Grants are available through the Fulbright student program for independently planned study or research projects or for positions as English teaching assistants in more than 140 nations. A Statement of Grant Purpose outlining the activities to be carried out in a participating nation outside of the United States for one academic year will be submitted by the candidate.
- NSF Graduate Research Fellowship
The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program honors and provides funding to exceptional graduate students pursuing research-based Master’s and doctorate degrees at recognized US universities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields that are funded by the NSF.
- Gilman International Scholarship for Study Abroad
Through the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship program of the US Department of State, students with limited financial resources can study or intern overseas and acquire skills that are essential to both our economic competitiveness and national security.
- Humanity in Action
International groups of Fellows are brought together by the Humanity in Action Fellowship to explore minority rights and conduct novel studies that investigate the reasons behind people’s historical and contemporary resistance to intolerance and defense of democratic norms. Every summer, Amsterdam, Atlanta, Berlin, Copenhagen, Sarajevo, and Warsaw host separate programs.
- Mitchell Scholarships
Sponsored by the US-Ireland Alliance, the George J. Mitchell Scholarship Program is a nationally competitive grant for US residents. The Mitchell Scholarship recognizes and fosters academic excellence, leadership, and a dedication to public service while introducing and connecting upcoming American leaders to the island of Ireland.
- Napier Fellowship
Pilgrims Place in Claremont offers an intergenerational mentorship prize called the Napier Fellowship. A few chosen fellows will be eligible to receive one of two grants, each worth up to $20,000. Seniors who are graduating and show exceptional leadership potential in the fields of environmental sustainability, social justice, and peace will receive awards. Up to three students from each of the five undergraduate colleges in Claremont may be nominated for the honors.
- USAID Payne International Development Graduate Fellowship Program
Outstanding young persons interested in pursuing careers in the Foreign Service of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) are targeted by the USAID Donald M. Payne Fellowship. A special route to the USAID Foreign Service is offered by the Fellowship, which offers up to $104,000 in benefits over two years for graduate education, internships, and professional development activities.
ELIGIBILITY
- Candidates must be pursuing admission to a two-year graduate program at a U.S. university in a field relevant to the Foreign Service, starting in the fall of 2024. They may be college grads or in their final year of undergraduate studies, with a June 2024 graduation date.
- Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale at the time of application.
- Applicants must be a U.S. citizen.
